Truck & Bus Accidents
Each year, thousands of individuals are seriously injured or killed in truck and bus accidents.
Truck Accidents
Truck accidents can be severe. According to government data, accidents involving large trucks account for less than 4 percent of all crashes, but nearly 8 percent of all fatal crashes.
The Center for National Truck and Bus Statistics reports that an average of 5,212 fatal accidents involving trucks occur each year. In 2007, 5,248 people were killed in truck accidents, while tens of thousands of other truck accidents caused injuries to auto drivers and pedestrians. An average of 368 pedestrians and 83 cyclists are killed each year in traffic accidents involving trucks, while many others are killed when driving or riding in automobiles involved in a truck accident. Tractors pulling one semitrailer are the most common truck accident scenario, constituting approximately 59 percent of all trucks involved in a fatal accident. Texas, California, and Florida have the greatest number of fatal truck accidents.
Surprisingly, most fatal truck accidents occur in very normal driving conditions. Almost two-thirds of fatal truck accidents occur in rural areas and in daylight, while 85 percent of fatal accidents happen in normal weather conditions. Nearly 80 percent of fatal trucking accidents occur on highways or interstates, according to the Center for National Truck and Bus Statistics.
Many trucking accidents result in serious bodily injury to victims, causing multiple bone fractures, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injuries, and other catastrophic injuries resulting in long-term or even life-long care, with lost wages and medical expenses causing an enormous cost to families.
Success in large truck accident cases frequently revolves around twin goals: (1) performing an accurate accident reconstruction, and (2) obtaining documentary evidence from the trucking company to support the plaintiff's case. Our lawyers are skilled in both areas and have successfully pursued these types of cases. We have successfully handled cases involving truck-auto collisions, tanker truck explosions, and logging truck accidents.
Bus Accidents
According the Center for National Truck and Bus Statistics gathered between 2004 and 2008, an average of 310 buses are involved in fatal traffic accidents each year. In 2008, 366 fatalities were reported in crashes involving a bus.
More than 90 percent of bus crashes occurred under normal weather conditions and more than 70 percent occurred during daylight hours, while nearly 80 percent of buses were on local trips within 50 miles of a home location when the accident occurred.
Unfortunately, buses owned or operated by school districts are most commonly involved in fatal accidents, putting schoolchildren at the highest risk of being involved in a bus crash.
The most common driving factors which cause fatal bus accidents are failure to yield to oncoming traffic, careless or inattentive driving, and failure to stay in the proper lane.
The majority of victims in fatal bus accidents are non-bus passenger motorists who are involved in the impact with the bus.
